JAWAHINE ZENTAR

Jawahine Zentar is a Franco-Moroccan film director, born and based in France. After five years studying management, she worked for over ten years as an assistant director and casting director on films such as Michael Haneke’s Happy End, James Watkins’ Bastille Day, Luc Besson’s Valerian and Sylvain Chomet’s Attila Marcel, thereby gaining solid experience on film sets. Following the death of her father a few years ago, she took the plunge into writing and directing.
Her short film Sur la tombe de mon père was released in 2022. It was selected for over a hundred international festivals, including Brest, Clermont-Ferrand, Namur and the Palm Springs International ShortFest; and received more than thirty awards, including the prestigious Golden Yusr at the Red Sea International Film Festival in 2022 and the Grand Prix at the 2023 Tangier National Film Festival.

Building on this work, she continues to explore the themes that are close to her heart and which are already present in this film: family and the passing on of traditions, exile and its day-to-day consequences for both those who leave and those who stay behind, emancipation and coming of age.
In 2025, she co-directed the short film Soleil Pâle with Adrian Moyse Dullin; the film made its debut at the 2026 Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival and has been selected for over fifty festivals to date, including TriBeCa, Musique & Cinéma and the Short Shorts Film Festival. Soleil Pâle won the Drama Award at the Aspen Shortsfest and Best Live Short at Hollyshorts. It is being screened as part of the LE COURT D’APRÈS programme.

Jawahine is currently writing her first feature film, Les Silencieuses, which was selected for the Red Sea Lodge in 2024; she hopes to shoot it in both France and Morocco, the two settings for the stories she wishes to tell.
